Biographical sketch of an old pioneer of Scott Co., Iowa: Capt. Leroy Dodge was born in Russia, Herkimer Co., New York on 25 December 1811 and died 17 June 1871. He was brought up on a farm and after he came of age, taught school in his neighborhood until 1834 when he came west to Galena, Ills. He worked as a postal clerk in Galena but in 1835 went to Dubuque, Iowa with Capt. George Atchison and John Atchison, as a clerk in a variety store. He later became captain of the steamer IONE. In 1836, his boat froze at New Boston and he then came to Rockingham Scott Co, Iowa and purchased several lots which he held until 1856 when he sold them to W.W. Westlake. In 1842, he purchased from James Grant and Jas. Davenport, administrators of the estate of Ben W. Clark, an extensive tract of land which has since become his home and where he died. In 1852, he was elected to the state legislature. In 1854, along with Capt. W.L. Clark, he established the first line of packets between the rapids. He retired in 1859 to his farm.
