January 2022 – Education Corner

By Linda Bergren Polich. It’s the beginning of a new year.  Are you always looking for the “perfect” organizational system for your genealogy research?  If you do a Google search on “organizing genealogy files”, you will see thousands of search results!

Things to think about …

Paper versus digital

  • Throw away duplicate copies of printed documents
  • Make sure ALL scanned documents and photos are saved with the same file name format for easy retrieval
  • BACK UP all digital files – several of you have more than 30 years of research that you certainly would not want to lose!  It’s best to back up your files onto an external device in addition to cloud backup

Consider compiling a family history book this year.  That is one way to organize all documents, photos, newspaper articles, book excerpts, etc. for each ancestor into one chapter of your book.  For example, on the Birth Record page, you can include the birth certificate, newspaper announcement of birth, baby book … anything related to the birth of each ancestor.

This year, our Society is putting more emphasis on writing and sharing family stories.  We are offering a Writing SIG (Special Interest Group) for our members on Zoom on February 16th, June 15th, and October 19th.  We are also planning at least one special program to help you compile a family history book.  Stay tuned!

Let’s make 2022 the best year ever for genealogy research and sharing!
