January 2021 Education Corner

By Linda Bergren Polich

As our lives slowly get back to some kind of “new normal” in 2021, we still will be spending lots of time at home.  What are some ways to make the most of our “at-home” time?  Here are a few ideas:

  • Take the Time to Read a Book.  If you are just beginning your family history research, there are lots of “how-to” books available.  Even if our local libraries are not open yet, you can often order a book online or download it to your Kindle reader.  Historical books help you understand what life was like for our ancestors during a particular era.  Check out County Histories.  You may be surprised to find your ancestor’s name listed!
  • Take the Time to Watch a Webinar.  There are lots of free genealogy webinars available.  One of my favorite websites <familytreewebinar.com> has over 1,000 webinars available on every topic of family history.  You can watch them for free on the date they are offered, or you can join as a member and have access to their entire library of webinars all the time!  Most have a 3-4 page handout available for you to download.  Check them out!
  • Take the Time to Stay Informed.  Our Society is continually adding new information to our website <www.ricigs.org>.  Be sure to check it frequently.  Have you subscribed to our Blog?  You can do that on our website, too.

Let’s go into this new year with a positive outlook!  Stay healthy and safe, and Happy Researching!
