Education Corner: October is Family History Month

By Linda Bergren Polich. October is Family History Month! How will you celebrate? This is a good time to assess your research.

Check your document list to see which records you are missing.
Request those birth/marriage/death records you need.
Check to be sure you have sources attached to each fact for everyone in your genealogy software database.
Request land records where available for your ancestors.
Find gravesites for family and friends.
If you can’t physically go to the cemeteries, use findagrave.com and billiongraves.com websites.

The holidays will be here soon. Those family gatherings are good times to interview older members of your family. Record those stories so they can become treasures for future generations.

And last but certainly not least … visit our RICIGS website often. We are always adding new information and resources that will help you trace your family history. Invite a family member or friend to join our Society so you can research together.

Happy Family History Month!
