By Linda Bergren Polich. It’s Here – the 1950 Federal Census has finally been released! Genealogists all across the United States were cheering on April 1st!
Although the name indexing is not complete, we can all start the searching process using the Enumeration District (ED) number for our ancestors.
There are several webinars and informational articles available to help with your search. Our Society is participating in the FamilySearch Community Project to help validate 1950 census data. Stay tuned to hear more about that in the next few weeks.
A good place to start now is 1950census.archives.gov. Follow the prompts and see what you can find.
Share your discoveries on our Facebook page … we love to hear about your research successes!
Why is this census release such a big deal? It gives us another checkpoint to track our ancestors and place them in a particular location in 1950. It tells us who was in the household in 1950, and the names of the neighbors who lived near our ancestors. It gives us occupation information about people living in each household. And … it gives us bonus information about selected names at the bottom of each page.
As genealogists, we know that every research clue is important, so take advantage of this newly released tool!
Happy Census Searching!
