DNA Musings #19: Finding more DNA matches for free

By Betty Hagberg. The primary way to use DNA in your genealogy is by identifying and researching individuals with whom you share DNA. And an easy and free way to find more DNA matches is by uploading your raw DNA to additional sites. The sites listed below all accept raw autosomal DNA uploads and give free access to DNA matches. In all cases you must register for a free account. To make full use of these sites you will have the option of paying an additional fee.

The links below will guide you through the process.

  1. Family Tree DNA
  2. MyHeritage
  3. LivingDNA
  4. GEDMatch

There are additional benefits to having your DNA on multiple sites. MyHeritage (based in Israel) and LivingDNA (based in England) have a strong international user base. GEDmatch has a unique set of free tools. Most sites will give you an additional ethnicity report.

Watch for an annual special offer from MyHeritage when access to their premium offerings is included if you upload during a specified time. (Last year it was in February)

Taking advantage of free autosomal DNA uploads is an easy way to get more from your DNA test.
